Sierra Commons Programs
Our Programs
At Sierra Commons, a program goes beyond a single class. Each program combines courses with hands-on support, peer learning, mentoring, and access to resources that help entrepreneurs put their ideas into practice. Programs are designed to create lasting impact, building both individual businesses and stronger rural economies.
Business Ignitor
Supports early-stage entrepreneurs in strengthening the local economy while creating meaningful work for themselves as founders.
The Business Ignitor is our cornerstone program, first launched in 2010 to give early-stage entrepreneurs the core education they need to start and grow a small rural business. It takes a heart-forward approach, combining practical tools with personalized guidance to help founders gain focus and clarity. Over the years, we’ve adapted the curriculum to serve a variety of audiences and sectors—including youth entrepreneurship, healthcare, and the arts—while always providing the resources entrepreneurs need to thrive.e.
Food Accelerator
Strengthens rural food webs in ways that foster resilience, improve community health, and promote environmental sustainability.
Our food program grew out of early Food Accelerator courses and has expanded into a regional initiative to strengthen the entire food economy. In addition to supporting entrepreneurs through training, the program maps and connects the local food web, builds stronger community among value-added food businesses, and creates a blueprint that other rural counties can replicate. This work builds on years of collaboration with farmers, co-ops, and food organizations to create a resilient and connected local food system.
Forest Entrepreneurship
To help launch new businesses that make communities safer from wildfires while providing high-paying jobs through goods and services that address critical forest and fire priorities.
Launched in response to increasing wildfire risk in our region, the Forest Entrepreneurship Trainings support new businesses that provide good-paying jobs while strengthening fire resilience in rural communities. Developed in partnership with the Sierra Business Council, the program has helped spark enterprises in land clearing, biochar, home hardening, and reforestation—tying economic opportunity directly to healthier, safer forests.
Ongoing Support
All of our programs are sustained by one-to-one advising, a weekly accountability group, and our Learning Hub. The Learning Hub unites students through shared experiences, an online community, and personalized mentoring—ensuring entrepreneurs continue to have guidance and resources long after their course or training ends.
Our Approach
Heart-forward. Hands-on. Rooted in local resilience.
We don’t just teach business. We walk alongside people who are building something from the ground up — guiding them with practical tools, honest advice, and a commitment to community.
Our programs are designed to help entrepreneurs build businesses that last, hire locally, and reflect the values of the people who create them.
“We are growing! We’re selling our tortillas in local stores, several local restaurants, and we are also serving schools.”
